Making a Dent

No photos, fridge looks about the same. Kazi and I have eaten 3 containers of soup, the leftover pad thai is gone and a salad container is almost empty. So there has been a bit of space created but it's hardly noticeable at this point. That's ok though, nothing NEW is going in there for at least two more weeks! Well, Michael hard-boiled half a dozen eggs but that doesn't count...they are the same eggs that were already in the fridge - they've just changed from liquid to solid. This Saturday,... Read more

View from the CN TowerMy daughter and I recently took a wee trip to Toronto a week before Christmas. With our busy lives we don't spend a lot of time together anymore so this Christmas I decided to give us the gift of some mother/daughter time by purchasing a Mirvish dinner/theatre/hotel/Toronto attraction package. It turned out to be a VERY GOOD deal. And so nice to be pampered for a couple of days. Kazi and I reconnected over martinis at Fred's Not Here and had an amazing meal: Jump Up... Read more

Sisterhood of the Travelling Sun Pendant

These are my girls. These are the girls who are my best friends. This is my sisterhood - the people I talk to when no one else will do, when you need that heart of a woman who listens and understands, who holds you when your heart is breaking, who laughs with you because they "get you" and your whacky brand of humour. These are my sisters with hearts of gold and I couldn't live without them. This is me. This is me celebrating New Year's Eve with the people I love best. This is me with a... Read more

New Year's Day - 2010

Today we had our first significant snowfall and it was extra nice as we weren't driving anywhere. YAY. Last night, or this morning I should say, we drove home from a party through freezing rain, luckily only a few blocks. This afternoon Michael and I had started dinner preparations as we were having a neighbour over but he was so excited about the snow we turned the stove off, put on our snow gear and headed outside to play.I could say we have resolved to have more fun this year - but we have... Different Kind of Christmas

From Life Begins at Retirement, 2 year ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

We don't know what goes on behind closed doors. Sometimes we think we know, but we don't know. Sometimes we have an inkling, or a feeling, sometimes we pretend and hope for the best, and then there are the times when you have to take action because deep down you know.....Such is the case with one of my students. She lived with her grandmother til she was 16 and her gramma passed away. Then she was placed with her father, who is mentally ill - he has schizophrenia. They hardly knew each other,... Read more

Stress-free Christmas

From Life Begins at Retirement, 2 year ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

Today in Bracebridge, Ontario, CanadaThe Christmas shopping has begun in earnest, but not by me! I can't remember ever having such a stress-free Christmas. I have a list and it is short. I know where I am going and I know what I am buying. Once or twice I was tempted to veer off-course but after reprimanding myself (gently) I got back on track. My lovely nineteen year old daughter emailed me her Christmas list along with pictures and links. What a dear. (She knows what she wants and knows... Read more

Generosity is Alive and Well

The True Meaning of ChristmasThe true meaning of Christmas is being amply demonstrated at my highschool. After putting out a group email to all the staff on behalf of one of my developmentally delayed students donations have been coming in left, right and centre. My student, a young lady of 18 who I will call Sarah, is in desperate circumstances. Given up by her mother at birth, she was raised by her paternal grandparents. When Sarah was about ten her grandfather committed suicide. Her... Read more

Outpouring of Help

Every year classes at the highschool where I teach take on an advent project. We raise money in a variety of ways to assist seniors, newcomers to Canada, street kids and families in need. This year we decided to help one of our own students - a girl with an intellectual disability who has had to live with her mentally ill (schizophrenic) father since her grandmother died two years ago.Dad has been in and out of work (currently out) and they have had their heat turned off due to non-payment and...
